Experience and qualifications
I’m a pianist, composer and educator with over 20 years’ experience in performance, teaching and professional music production. I studied piano under the renowned and highly influential teacher Christine Brown for 12 years and continued my performance studies with pianist David Murray at Newcastle University, with a final-year recital, equivalent to a licentiate diploma. I was awarded the Lloyd Hartley prize for Grade 8 piano and have extensive experience as a soloist, winning numerous piano competitions.
As a composer, I’ve contributed music to a wide range of film and television productions and international advertising campaigns, including the award-winning film Harry Birrell Presents Films of Love and War and the follow-up BBC series Films of Scotland, Channel 4’s Grand Designs, and placements in trailers such as Tenet and Game of Thrones, the opening ceremony of the Rio Olympics and TBS’s Miracle Workers. My work is published by BMG, Universal Music and Warner Chappell and several other independent publishers. I have been fortunate enough to work with some of the industry's leading orchestras, musicians, engineers and producers.
I hold a Master’s degree in Composition and Production from Leeds Conservatoire, where I currently lecture in Film Music.
I have academic interests in skill acquisition, cognitive psychology and educational psychology which, alongside many years of practical experience, inform my approach to learning and performance. My students range from beginners, to diploma and professional entry musicians.
